Leroi C. Johnson
Born in Buffalo, New York in a racially prejudiced era, Leroi Johnson used art as a means to assuage his daily struggles in fitting into society. Johnson’s work is touched by his training in commercial art and almost 30-year collection of sophisticated African art. His early works were a vivid recollection of his life. Later on, he delved into abstraction as a representation of human experience and life in general.
